We didn’t know that much about the compounds in the cannabis plant. Up to this day, we have identified more than 100 cannabinoids. From all these cannabinoids, THC and CBD are the most famous ones.

However, there are many other cannabinoids such as CBC, CBG or CBN. CBN is one of these cannabinoids that are potentially useful. Many of these cannabinoids have potential medical properties and mostly all these cannabinoids aren’t psychoactive.

What is CBN and What is CBN Used For?

CBN doesn’t come directly from the cannabis plant. Instead, it is obtained from the oxidation of THC. In short, THC converts into CBN when it is degraded. Many cannabis users dismiss CBN as it is mildly psychoactive, and it comes from the Degradation of THC.

Nonetheless, CBN has been researched for its potential medical properties. Apparently, CBN has strong sedative properties. It is not as known and researched as CBD, but this doesn’t mean it doesn’t have impressive potential medical properties.

Both CBN and CBD have similar properties. They have been studied as potential treatments for inflammation, seizures, and pain-management. In short, CBN is a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with sedative properties.

CBN is also useful in the treatment of insomnia and other sleeping disorders. Moreover, as it is just mildly psychoactive, which means that you will not experience a high sensation.

The rule of thumb is that CBN has one quarter of the THC potency. In the past, it was discarded as “spoiled” THC, but this view is changing, and more cannabis growers are interested in developing cannabis buds rich in CBN.

CBN and Medical Properties

Like many cannabinoids, CBN has anti-inflammatory properties. CBN interacts mainly with our CB2 receptors like CBD does. Moreover, it is been research for its potential anticonvulsant properties. CBD is been used as a treatment for epilepsy and CBN could also be used to treat epileptic seizures.

In addition, CBN is being researched for the treatment of chronic pain relief, to help heal bones, antibacterial and also to increase appetite (like THC).

What Cannabis Strains are Rich in CBN?

As previously mentioned, CBN is a metabolite of THC. In other words, it is obtained from the exterior oxidation of THC. In short, cannabis strains don’t have high concentrations of CBN. There are some cannabis strains with more than 0.3% of CBN, however, the best way to get CBN is by aging your cannabis buds.

Examples of cannabis strains with more than 0.3% of CBN are Green Crack, Lemon Kush, Bubble Gum or Durban Poison.

How do we Get CBN?

The only way to get CBN is by degrading (oxidation) THC. In short, aging it. The process is simple, you have to delay the harvesting process. Then, the cannabis buds have to be dried and cured for a longer time. The process is not simple and that’s why there are not that much cannabis CBN oils in the market.

There are some brands that are offering CBN products, mainly as tinctures, oils and edibles.

CBN: Conclusion

CBN is a metabolite of THC. This cannabinoid is difficult to extract and it doesn’t have the same popularity as CBD. For many cannabis users, it is just mishandled THC and over the hill. Nonetheless, this isn’t entirely true. Unlike THC, CBN is not psychoactive, but it has potential medical properties that could be useful in the treatment of epilepsy, inflammation, to increase appetite or even to heal bones.

Most of cannabis strains have very low CBN concentrations (it’s difficult to find a cannabis strain with concentrations higher than 1%). The best way to get CBN is by aging and curing your cannabis buds.
