The scientific community has identified at least 144 cannabinoids with varied effects. Most of cannabinoids are not psychoactive or they have mild psychoactive properties. The most known cannabinoid is THC, as it is the most psychoactive one of all of them. Recently, CBD has gained popularity for its properties useful in the treatment of epileptic seizures and anxiety. In addition to these two cannabinoids, there are many other cannabinoids with medical properties. For instance, we have written about CBG, CBC and CBN.

There is another cannabinoid called CBT, which is considered a minor cannabinoid as it is not found in big concentrations. Nonetheless, many extraction companies have developed CBT distillates. Let’s explain what CBT is and what are its health benefits.

What is CBT (Cannabitriol)?

CBT or cannabitriol is a minor cannabinoid with a structure similar to THC. CBT is not present in all cannabis strains and therefore it is difficult to know exactly its effects and health benefits. It is biosynthesized from THCA (the acidic form of THC).

Cannabitriol and Cannabicitran are often confused. CBT (cannabitriol), as previously mentioned, is biosynthesized from THCA while Cannabicitran is biosynthesized from CBDA (acidic from of CBD).

CBT (cannabitriol) is not scheduled under the UN convention on Psychotropic Substances nor is it classified under the Controlled Substances Act in the US.

As CBT is a minor cannabinoid, there are not studies about its effects and health properties. Some scientists claim it is an essential cannabinoid for the entourage effect, i.e. the synergistic effect produced by all cannabis compounds (cannabinoids, terpenes…). As CBT has a similar structure as THC, then it is possible that CBT has very similar therapeutic properties as THC.

In conclusion, cannabitriol is present in very small concentrations and that’s the main reason why we don’t know that much about this cannabinoid. However, it has a similar chemical structure as THC, which means that both cannabinoids have very similar properties.

What is CBT (Cannabicitran)?

Cannabicitran is also known by the acronym CBT. However, CBT is biosynthesized from CBDA. Cannabicitran was first synthesized in 1971 and it was called cytrilidene cannabis. As cannabitriol, Cannabicitran is also considered a minor cannabinoid and therefore, there are not that many studies about it. Some old studies have found that it helps in reducing eye pressure and hence it could a potential treatment for glaucoma.

There are some companies specialized in the extraction and isolation of minor cannabinoids such as CBT (both Cannabicitran and cannabitriol).

Little is known about Cannabicitran. It’s a minor cannabinoid and it is speculated (as cannabitriol) that it also contributes to the entourage effect.

There are leading hemp cannabinoid producers such as GVB Bipharma researching and isolating Cannabicitran. These studies are very recent, and they are studying its function and potential benefits.

CBT (Cannabitriol and Cannabicitran): Conclusion

Both Cannabitriol and Cannabicitran are minor cannabinoids that are still not well-known. Recent studies are researching CBT (Cannabitriol and Cannabicitran) to study their structure, function, and potential medical properties.

There are some cannabis extraction companies that sell CBT isolates. Nonetheless, we still don’t know that much about their potential effects and their psychoactive properties.

You will not find that much information about these two cannabinoids as they are rare and found in very small concentrations.
